Zakat calculator

Rupees, both nisab measures, and every step of the sum shown — so you can check it rather than trust it. Which nisab you use changes whether anything is due at all, so both are here side by side.

Today's rates

Per gram, in rupees. You need these to value your own gold anyway, and a rate stored in a page is a rate that is wrong tomorrow.

What you hold

What comes off

Which debts are deductible is one of the things scholars differ on — most hold that debts due now come off, rather than the whole of a long mortgage.

Zakat due

This is arithmetic, not a ruling

The sum is simple: total what zakat is due on, take off what is deducted, and if the rest reaches nisab, 2.5% of it is due. What is hard is the judgements around it — which debts come off, how a rented property is treated, whether a committee payout counts yet. Scholars differ on several of them, and this page does not settle any of it. Where an answer depends on a position, it says so instead of quietly choosing one.

Why the nisab you choose matters so much

Nisab is 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver. Those weights have not changed. What has changed is the relationship between the two metals: silver has fallen so far against gold that the silver nisab is now worth a small fraction of the gold one.

The practical effect is large. On the silver nisab, many people with modest savings owe zakat. On the gold nisab, the same people owe nothing. Many scholars recommend silver for exactly that reason — it is the lower bar and more is given to those entitled to it. Others hold gold to be the appropriate measure today. This calculator shows what each one gives, and leaves the choice where it belongs.

What zakat is and is not due on

  • Due: cash in hand and in the bank, gold and silver in any form, business stock at what you would sell it for, money owed to you that you expect back, shares and funds, and committee money you have received.
  • Not due: the house you live in, your car, your furniture, your clothes, and the tools of your trade — things you use rather than hold as wealth.
  • Depends: property bought to resell is generally trade goods; property held to rent out is a case where positions differ. A pension you cannot access yet is another. Ask rather than assume.

The lunar year

Zakat is due on wealth held for a full lunar year, which is about eleven days shorter than a solar one. Many people fix a date — often in Ramadan — and calculate on the same date each year, which is simpler than tracking each asset separately and is widely accepted.

Questions

Why do I have to enter the gold rate myself?

Because a rate stored in a page is wrong the next day, and fetching one would mean this page making a network call — which it does not do, by design. You need today's rate to value your own gold in any case.

Are my figures sent anywhere?

No. What you own is nobody's business but yours. Everything stays in your browser, kept only in local storage so you can come back to it. Clearing your browser data clears it.

Is 2.5% always the rate?

For the wealth this calculator covers, yes — one fortieth. Agricultural produce and livestock are calculated differently and are not covered here.
